“Church doesn’t just happen on Sundays!”

If you’ve been a part of a church for even a little bit, chances are you’ve heard some version of this cliché but true statement. However, as a church leader, this reality should prompt further planning.

What can you do to help church members engage throughout the week? Are there activities, events, or groups you should be offering to encourage engagement? How can you create spaces each week for people to come together to grow in their faith and further your mission?

When church members are engaged beyond a Sunday morning, often there is a greater sense of community and deeper spiritual growth. The impacts of this are both increased faith and increased belonging.

To get you started, we’ve worked to identify 10 strategies your church can try to increase member engagement and foster a greater sense of community during the week.

1. Midweek Bible Study Groups

Small group Bible studies provide an opportunity for members to dive deeper into the Word in a more intimate setting. Try to offer a variety of studies targeting different audiences to foster deeper connections and improve your congregation’s understanding of the Scripture.

2. Volunteer Opportunities

Create service opportunities during the week for members to participate in community outreach. This may include serving in your church’s food pantry, a community clothes closet, or even helping out at volunteer clinics.

3. Interactive Social Media Content

Social media is a great way to engage with members throughout the week. Consider using polls, hosting Q&A sessions, or offering devotional content to encourage members to comment and share.

4. Online Sermon Discussions

Another way to engage online and extend Sunday’s conversation is by hosting online sermon discussions. These can be in the form of live webinars or group chats, where members can reflect on and discuss the key takeaways from the sermon.

5. Midweek Prayer Sessions

Prayer is a great way for your members to come together and intercede for your church, community, and current events. These meetings could be hosted virtually or in person to help keep members spiritually engaged throughout the week.

6. Family-Oriented Activities

Plan activities tailored to families, such as parenting workshops or family game nights. These activities offer a chance for families to grow together in their faith while also building connections with other church families.

7. Weekly Email Newsletters

A weekly email newsletter is a great way to keep everyone at your church up-to-date. Each week send updates, devotional content, and upcoming events to keep members informed and unified.

8. Member-Led Initiatives

Empower your members to take the lead by encouraging them to create and organize initiatives that reflect their interests and passions. Whether it's a book club, an exercise group, or a creative writing workshop, giving members ownership of church activities makes them feel valued and invested.

9. Faith-Based Challenges

Another great way to keep members engaged and motivated is by introducing weekly or monthly challenges designed to encourage spiritual growth and personal development. These can include daily scripture reading challenges, memorizing Bible verses together, or completing different acts of kindness.

10. Celebrate Engagement Milestones

Lastly, recognize and celebrate the efforts of church members who actively participate in church activities throughout the week. Acknowledging milestones such as attending Bible studies, volunteering, or completing a faith challenge shows appreciation and encourages continued involvement. Consider offering shout-outs in the weekly newsletter or presenting small rewards like certificates or gift cards.
